Mithuna (Gemini) – The Couple

Rules the Hands, Arms and Shoulders of the Kala Purusha

Sage Parashara says: The sign Mithuna rises with its head, it is represented by a couple (Man and Woman) holding a mace and a lute: It resides in the West and its element is Air. It is biped, is strong in the night. It resides in villages and is windy in temperament; it has an even body and it’s hue is grass green. It’s lord is Mercury.

Air – Gemini seeks to follow a fair and intellectual path.

Dual – Gemini will prefer being open to the many possibilities of life, as they are equally able to start something new or perfect what they have.

Male – Gemini is a positively charged sign – given to action and external life.

Rajas – Gemini is primarily motivated by the possibility of fulfilling a desire.

Biped – Gemini has 2 legs, which shows an average capacity to move forward and persevere through life, yet a more adaptable nature than the quadrupeds as 2-legged creatures move laterally with more ease.

Even – Gemini will want equality in their dealings and a fair exchange which, allows the flexibility and neutrality to seek intellectual truth

Mercury – Gemini is ruled by Mercury, which shows an intellectual and curious path through life.

At the evolutionary stage of Gemini, the soul is curious and experimental, flexible and open, eager to discover new things about the world. As the 3rd sign, they are perhaps the most skilled and will have many interests. They love to learn and use their minds, as the lightning speed of Mercury is unfettered, expressing his male energy through Mutable Air in Gemini. This makes them the most verbal and loquacious, perhaps the most playful and certainly the most flirtatious as well. They are generally witty and amiable but can also be “jack of all trades, master of none”. They prefer the stimulation that accompanies learning new things to doing the work necessary to master them. As Gemini rules the neck, arms and shoulders this is where we get the ability to turn our head from side to side and consider all of life’s possibilities, not just what is directly in front of us. With this comes the intelligence to ponder these choices and to act on them, developing our skills in the process, through the hands and arms. Being twins, one male and one female, gives them a capacity for the “evil twin” syndrome and shows them often involved with 2 things at a time. They are regarded as the most adaptable of all signs, but they can be seduced by novelty and trivia, pursuing things simply for entertainment or stimulation. Their delicate nervous systems can easily be overwhelmed or exhausted, leading to anxiety and neurotic behavior. But they can also be very sensitive and emotionally attuned, usually idealistic and fair-minded owing to their even appearance. Mercury can give them impartiality from their own mental dramas as well. When they seek inner knowledge not outer stimulation, their natural skill and intelligence can be very spiritual.

The Gemini native experiences vulnerabilities in the area of living a life aligned with a core set of values that would allow for a consistent means of security and wealth to manifest, as Moon rules the 2nd house. The native will experiment with many value systems and interests in order to compensate for this, as the Sun rules the 3rd house.

Sun is the 3rd house lord. As the lord of a cruel house, The Sun is a cruel planet. The Sun shows the skilled nature of Geminis and their many interests, as well as the importance they place on these interests and skills. The Sun will bring an enthusiasm and energy for all types of learning and interesting activity, making them self-motivated learners with much ingenuity. The Sun aligned with Venus makes them artists, aligned with Mars, engineers or athletes, aligned with Mercury, writers. The Sun as temporally cruel planet will show a forceful, competitive and stimulated nature as they pursue and develop their abilities. On a deeper level, the Sun will cause problems, which will free them from pursuing things merely for stimulation.

The exaltation point of the Sun in the 11th House shows the Geminis must learn to use their many skills for the benefit of all, not just for their own entertainment. When they do this, their skills can be a source of profits and gains for themselves and others. This selfless approach will bring a more enthusiastic, expressive and dynamic quality to the natives, compelling the Gemini to be more generous with what they learn. The self-willed quality of the 3rd lord can bring enormous success and benefit to the world when operating from higher 11th house principles.

The debilitation point of the Sun in the 5th house shows the harm that is done to their overall growth, creativity, children and Dharma by pursuing too many things in a self-interested way. This weakens Geminis vitality and drains their enthusiasm. There is a susceptibility to becoming addicted to media and other type of computer influences, which can cause their normal relations to suffer. This debility in Libra shows the potential harm caused to relations with other people. These lower 3rd house qualities are very problematic for Geminis. Their sensitive nervous system and impressionable natures are easily stressed and their health undermined by it.

Moon is the 2nd house lord. As the lord of a neutral house, The Moon is a neutral planet; Yet Parashara states, “the Moon is a principal killer who kills according to association.” The Moon shows Geminis changeability regarding their value system, their friendships, familial closeness, wealth and speech. The Moon is an enemy to Mercury showing fluctuations in these areas of life. The Moon gives them a sweet speaking nature, but an inconsistent one. Geminis can be close with their families and friends, but are removed from the day-to-day ins and outs of each person’s life, preferring to be immersed in their own interests. The Moon can give a high ability to manifest wealth, but first a consistent value system must replace their manifold interests, which always seem to take them elsewhere. The Moon is the unifying quality of Mind and Mercury the informational, detail-oriented quality. According to myth Mercury is the illegitimate child of the Moon, thus a tension is seen as the subjective moods and fluctuations of the Moon undermine the neutrality of their ruling planet Mercury, taking him further away from a clear assessment of the details.

The exaltation point of The Moon in the 12th House shows the necessity for the Gemini to find mental peace in solitude and isolation, not the external world of stimulation. This more introspective mindset will lead to a set of values and a sense of self esteem based on their own reflections. They must learn what to let go of and what to embrace mentally and emotionally, rather than always seeking to remain neutral in their assessment of situations, which leads to greater confusion and the inconsistent values and low self-esteem they are trying to overcome. The innocent and pure nature of the Moon’s exalted point in the 12th house shows a naturally devoted mentality just beneath the surface of the twins.

The debilitation point of the Moon in the 6th House shows how mental disquiet and a life lived without a proper value system and its accompanying self-esteem can bring great harm to this native. Inconsistent speech leads to arguments. Also, debts, expenses and health problems are the result of the directionless course of Gemini natives lacking proper inner guidance and a life course anchored in a peaceful heart. This could account for the Moon as a principle killer, whose associations harms these natives. The Moon is how we absorb our environment and her unfriendliness toward Mercury shows a great deal of harm is possible to Geminis when they take the wrong things in.

* The Moon’s exaltation point is in the 12th house, thus she is the awake lord of a positive house in a dusthana. This shows how a strong Moon will bring ups and downs revolving around resources, self worth and family stability to teach the native the value of isolation and turning inward through introspection to find these things and the benefits of the emotional stability they bring. A weak Moon will act as a sleeping 2nd lord in a dusthana, which will deprive the native of these problems and the chance to learn from them. This creates a false reassurance and neglect in these areas of life, which lead to arguments, enemies and prevents emotional growth.

Mars is the 6th and 11th house lord. As the lord of 2 cruel houses, Mars becomes a most inauspicious planet. Mars shows the motivated and often ambitious nature of Geminis. Mars also gives them a high level of skill and logic. Mars gives a love of athletics and overall martial prowess but they are likely to be competitive both physically and mentally. Mars holds the mace as the male half of the couple as such he can make them pushy and attached to their opinions, which create many conflicts. Ruling two cruel houses and being a natural malefic makes him a most terrible planet for these natives. Even when Mars is strong, there will usually be an ungraceful nature to his energy. He can lead to an erratic and excessive display of force and lead them to frustration, hostility and violence.

The exaltation point of Mars in the 8th house shows the need for Geminis to transform the harsh, eccentric and forceful quality of Mars and the greater insights possible when they do. The vitality of Mars, when turned inward through the 8th house can lead to deep transformation. As the natural indicator of courage, Mars’s exaltation point in the 8th house shows the natural courage the Gemini natives have when confronting life’s deeper questions, like immortality and the nature of Self. The penetrating and logical nature of Mars greatly helps these natives awaken to higher truths.

The debilitation point of Mars in the 2nd house shows how a self willed forceful nature takes Geminis further from the consistent values and self esteem they need in order to awaken. Their wealth and overall stability are harmed by this lack of values, brought on by the ambitious and argumentative quality of Mars. Debilitated Mars shows the necessity for Geminis to speak truthfully and approach their career ambitions, wealth and family relations in a courageous way. These problems take them further away from the greater transformation indicated by the exalted point falling in the 8th house.

* Mars’ exaltation point is in the 8th house, thus he is the awake lord of a positive house in a dusthana. This show how a strong Mars will work to free the Gemini native by suppressing excessive worldly ambitions and the desire for success. This lack of ambition allows them to turn inward and develop a more of a selfless approach. Mars will lead the native to Karma  Yoga and practical courage, positive 6th house qualities, as the exalted point also puts to sleep the obstructing nature of the 6th house, as being awake in the 8th house would indicate. A weak Mars will see these indications are reversed. Excessive ambition is given and a competitive, lower 6th house nature is shown, which take the native further from growth and truth as Mars becomes a sleeping 11th lord in a positive house.

*Mars will influence other planets and houses as the 11th lord unless he tenants the 6th house.
